The MegaSquirt BMW Project:
Due to my special interest in the software and hardware of the MegaSquirt ECU and all its ancillary parts, I decided in October 2018 to prepare another engine. The following goals were set:
- The engine is mounted on a frame; thus, it is not installed in a vehicle or for sale.
- The engine is used for educational purposes, so it can be utilized in regular lessons and courses. After the project’s completion, interested parties can sign up for a course where everything about the programmable engine management system related to the BMW engine will be covered. Of course, with a live demonstration with a running engine. Interested? Keep an eye on this page or contact me via the guest book or contact form.
- Converting classical techniques to a computer-controlled system takes an excessive amount of time. Therefore, it is more convenient for this project to replace an existing engine management system and utilize the already present sensors and actuators;
- The engine from a BMW 535i e34, which we already owned, has been deemed suitable for conversion. This specimen is in mint condition and has been idle for several years. Given the engine’s condition, revision is unnecessary, but a thorough inspection and maintenance are certainly required.
- A dashboard with a fixed desktop computer with one or more monitors will be mounted on the engine frame. TunerStudio will be installed on this PC. One screen will be used for the gauges, and the other to show or adjust the tables.
- All tasks will be described on this website; with every update, the current page will be expanded.
Note! The project is still ongoing. As of now (April 2019), the engine has been successfully started for the first time. It is now getting even more interesting; tuning will begin from now on. The pages shown below will be updated accordingly!
