Twin spark:
Twin spark is the name Alfa Romeo uses for their engines, which are equipped with 2 spark plugs per cylinder. In a twin spark engine, there are two different types of spark plugs per cylinder; namely, the center spark plugs (central spark plugs) and the side spark plugs (side spark plugs). This is shown in the images below. Due to this technology, fuel injection can also occur differently (combustion is not limited to directly under the spark plug), resulting in combustion over a larger surface area.
This benefits the power output. Especially older Alfas could easily have a 1.4 engine with relatively high power compared to other cars. In Italy, road tax is determined based on engine displacement, which is why they experimented with getting more power from a smaller engine displacement this way.
