Internal combustion engines

Passenger cars have been equipped with combustion engines for decades. Gasoline and diesel engines are still popular and will be used in new passenger and commercial vehicles until at least 2035. It is possible that after 2035 new vehicles with internal combustion engines may still be sold, but only with synthetic fuels. Electrification (in the form of hybrid or fully electric) is increasing considerably, but will not completely replace the combustion engine in the short term. It is expected that people will continue to drive their (old) cars with combustion engines for longer as the government increasingly forces car manufacturers to convert new vehicles to “zero-emissions” in order to achieve climate goals.
